  About the car-charger thing, I sympathize. Mine broke with the original iPhone. Oh well. I just left an old iPod connected to the car. It's suboptimal, but I can live with it.
  
  About the new iPhone not fitting the old cases...

  ...did it take you until now to figure this out? Seriously. What would you expect? If you buy form-fitting cases for your portable devices, then every redesign in form results in ill-fitting cases. This is an entirely new generation of iPhone, with new technology, new chips, and they redesigned it. They GET to redesign the case. People would complain if they DIDN'T.
  
  So it's a poor fit. That's life. Trying to squeeze yourself into the role of The Guy Who Was Screwed is an even worse fit, though. Brace up a little.

  I'll give you the point about the charging thing, but it's hardly an issue TBH. I'm a little disappointed I finally have to get rid of my old 4G iPod firewire charger, but seeing as that is a good 4-5 years old now it's hardly a rip off, especially when there was a new AC adaptor in the box.
  
  I have bought a new dock and cable, but my old dock still works fine, it's just being pensioned off to my desk at work, the new cable is needed to replace the firewire one that was 4 years old.
  
  I've never bought an iPod case, it's an item with a finite lifespan. It's going to get a little damaged and a few scratches really aren't the end of the world.
  
  So all in all in the past 5 years of iPod ownership I've spent precisely £29.98 on accessories, and that was this afternoon.
  
  £30 in 5 years doesn't seem bad to me.

  iPod accessories haven't been guaranteed to work with the iPhone from the beginning. For example, any iPod device that connects to the dock connector and to an FM transmitter to send iPod audio into your car radio has never worked with iPhone. Something to do with too many radio transmitters inside the iPhone, probably to do with the idea that the same glitch that makes screeching noises come out of your computer speakers when your cell phone is near them. The iPhone probably can't surmount that problem, ergo such devices have never worked with the iPhone. In fact, I've yet to see one of these devices advertise iPhone compatibility. And yeah, some of these little gimcracks that charge iPods won't charge iPhones.

  I forgot to use the 'sarcasm' tags, sorry. Yeah, it sucks that I've had to change things up yet again, but as an Apple/Mac fanboy, I'm used to it at this point.

  My Incase thing for my original iPhone fits my new iPhone 3G even better.. Now, I did experience having my iPod cassette adapter for the car not work for the iPhone, but the case thing works just fine for me.

  OTOH, I read an article today by someone who claimed that the iPhone 3G fits in his iPhone case. I guess YOU bought the wrong case.

  Actuallly, my iSkin EVO fits just fine, but I hate squishy cases.

  I agree - bought my car with built in ipod connector - use it for long road trips - totally unacceptable that ipod did not tell or notify about change in connectors - still using my 1st gen ipod in car because new nano won't charge - - - apple sucks . . . there is no good explanation from a technical standpoint - i'm not happy but can handle replacing my dock connected to my stereo and my little round speaker system in office - but CAN"T replace car to cover for apple's need to force us to buy new and different accesories. I'm so upset and can't believe them. Replacing iphone with blackberry because I'm so sick of them.
